The Drop Zone has returned to Toronto with one of the event's tallest buildings yet.

Thursday, October 4, 2012
175 Bloor St. East

Have you ever wanted to be a superhero? This is your chance!

Online Registration Is Now Open!

The Easter Seals Drop Zone Toronto is a unique and exhilarating fundraising event that encourages ordinary individuals to become superheroes for a day. Participants step outside their comfort zones and face their fears by rappelling from the top of a building, while raising much needed funds for Easter Seals kids.

The rappel is facilitated by Remote Access Technology, a company whose staff are all highly-trained, fully certified and extremely experienced. Every possible measure is taken to ensure the safety of our rappellers as they challenge themselves and change the lives of children and youth with physical disabilities.

The Details

When: Thursday, October 4, 2012.
Where: 175 Bloor St. East (Bloor St. & Church St.).
What: A dizzying, knee-shaking, pulse- pounding 20-storey rappel down the outside of the CREIT head office building.
Who: Anyone over the age of 18 who is willing to step outside their comfort zone and face their fears!
How: By raising a minimum of $1,500, participants earn the opportunity of a lifetime to participate in this exhilarating event.
Why: That’s a great question! To raise money for the 20,000 children and youth with physical disabilities in Ontario. In 2011, our brave superheroes raised over $100,000 for Easter Seals kids!

SPACE IS LIMITED, SO REGISTER TODAY! You can register as an individual rappeller or create a team of superheroes.

Once you’ve registered, you’ll be able to create your own personal online fundraising page where you can post a photo, personalize a message and explain to your family, friends and colleagues exactly why you’re throwing yourself off a building!

*Please note: Because space is limited and rappel spots fill up quickly, rappellers who have not confirmed $250 in pledges within 60 days of their registration will have their registration cancelled and their spot released.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is this even legal?
Absolutely! All necessary permits, approvals and licenses are in place. There’s nothing to worry about, except the thing about rappelling from a 20-storey building!

Do I have to be a superstar athlete to do this?
Not at all. Whether you’re an average Joe couch potato, a weekend warrior, or a seasoned athlete, Drop Zone is for you. Your descent is controlled by technique, rather than strength.

How old do I have to be to rappel?
You must be 18 years of age or older by October 4, 2012 to participate in the Easter Seals Drop Zone Toronto. No ifs, ands, or buts about it!

How safe is this? I won’t free-fall from the top of the building, will I?
Our technical crew is highly-trained, fully certified and extremely experienced. Every possible measure is taken to ensure the safety of our rappellers. You control your own descent with a rappel device. If you pull too hard, the device will lock. If you let go of the device, it will lock. If you start to rappel too quickly, the device will lock. If you let go of the rope, the device will lock. If you get tired and want to rest, the device will lock until you reset it and resume your descent. In other words, your device is created to help ensure you descend safely under any and all circumstances.

Will someone teach me how to do this?
Yes. Prior to your rappel, you will be required to attend at least one mandatory training session provided by our highly trained experts. On the day of your rappel, you will also go through a thorough review of the safety precautions to ensure that you have a safe and fun rappel.

How long will it take me to rappel?
Depending on your comfort level, it can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to go from top to bottom.

Can my friends and family come to cheer me on?
Absolutely! The more the merrier. Plus, if no one witnesses this, do you really think they’re going to believe you when you tell them that you rappelled down the outside of a downtown Toronto office tower during rush hour?

Do I really have to raise $1,500 in order to rappel?
Yes. Anyone who wants to earn the opportunity of a lifetime to participate in this exhilarating event, is required to fundraise (or pay) the $1,500 minimum.

What if I am part of a team? How much does my team have to raise?
Each member of the team must individually raise $1,500. For example, a team of 4 rappellers must raise a total of $6,000.

Some participants raised their required $1,500 for family members with disabilities, some to support a good cause and some just for the thrill of rappelling down the side of the 21 storey landmark office town.

“People living with disabilities in Saskatchewan get out of their comfort zone every day to live active and barrier free lives.” said Regional Director of the Saskatchewan Abilities council, Karen Moore. “That’s what we did here today,” she continued. “It’s a big challenge but it’s nothing compared to what a person with a disability faces every day.”

Camp Easter Seal is the only barrier-free, fully accessible summer camp in the province providing a true camp experience through adaptive technology. This year’s total funds raised reached $60,000 and 40 children will attend Camp Easter Seal this year because of it.

Getting out over the ledge of Hill Tower II takes determination. Ordinary people conquered their fears for a good cause. Century 21 Canada’s president, Don Lawby, made the trip from Vancouver to Regina to conquer his fear of heights and to support Camp Easter Seal. Three participants in wheel chairs also made the descent.

Keeping all superheroes safe during their rappel were our superhero sponsors and Drop Zone supporters: Remote Access Technology (RAT) from Halifax and Regina’s own Haztech Fire and Safety Services. Each individual and organization involved committed their time, effort and knowledge to our success. Watch for Drop Zone’s return to Regina next summer for more super-sized superhero action.
